The Apron Flag is Terence Sorour’s first historical novel and the beginning of a South African saga about friendship, family and loyalty during a period of profound political change.

Set in Johannesburg and the Transvaal in 1895, the story unfolds against the events surrounding the Jameson Raid. Harold Sandal and his Boer neighbour Gert Snyman are close friends whose lives and families have become deeply connected. But as political tensions between Boer and Uitlander communities increase, events beyond their control begin to test that friendship.

When Doctor Jameson and his Raiders enter the Transvaal in an attempt to support an uprising, Harold and Gert find themselves drawn towards opposing loyalties. Alongside them is Mokgethi, a young man from Bechuanaland seeking a new beginning as the political landscape around him becomes increasingly unstable.

Rather than telling the story only through politicians, military leaders and historical events, The Apron Flag explores the Jameson Raid through the experiences of ordinary people whose friendships and choices are shaped by forces larger than themselves.

The novel combines South African historical fiction with a story of friendship, sacrifice and divided allegiance, offering readers a human perspective on one of the significant events preceding the Anglo-Boer War.

The Apron Flag is Book 1 in the series. The story continues four years later in The Torn Flag, where the Sandal and Snyman families find themselves divided once more as the Anglo-Boer War begins.
